The guava fruit is classified as a berry by most botanists, and it occurs in clusters with individual berries in sizes just under one inch. Each guava berry is covered by a rough rind and the pulp inside occurs in colors of white, pink, or red.
Guava trees grow best in partial shade on acidic soils. The plants are almost disease-free and harvesting is usually done by shaking the ripe guavas when they have changed color and picking the leaves or the husk. They keep for up to a week in the refrigerator and can be peeled and eaten raw in desserts or salads. If dipped in diluted lemon juice, the color of the flesh remains clear.
The fruit is used in puddings, cakes, juices, and jellies and is a rich source of vitamins A and C and many healthy minerals. Guava is grown commercially in Florida and California, where the shrub has naturalized in many southern forests and is mistakenly considered a local historical plant.
